A utility patent is the most common type of patent, and this is usually what people think of when they think of a patent. A utility patent protects any new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, or composition of matter.
Generally speaking, a utility patent will protect the function of a product. The claims define the scope of protection. Broad claims will protect the actual product, and variations to the product. Narrow claims may protect only the actual product, and competitors may be able to invent around a narrow patent without infringing it.
